How About Mac OS X on My AMD64 System

I know … it is illegal to run hackintosh macintosh OS X on any other x86/PPC platform other than “Apples” … but then again I did it just for fun and to show coolness (mine and OS X) to friends. But still, ain’t that COOL … I mean running nearly 100% working version of OS X 10.4.10 (even updated it using Apple’s Update Utility) on an AMD Athlon64 based system.

One PC able to run several OS - Linux, Solaris, Windows and now OS X …. that wasn’t possible just few years ago, on a desktop computer and so smoothly, if you know what I mean.

One thing for sure, even though I consider Linux to be my choice of OS, I gotta say that OS X is the best breed that desktop OS has to offer. Now only if I can manage to run Leo on this hardware to have even more fun.

    Hey,

Would you mind telling me where you learned to do this? everywhere I go I see that it is impossible to have os x on amd 64 bit. I have a acer aspire 5520 and I want to try this. Which version of os x did you use and any hint would be appreciated….

As you can understand, I cannot give out howto/instructions over here, so I’ll give you some hints/clues:

    1. forum-dot-insanelymac-dot-com
    2. forum-dot-osx86scene-dot-com
    3. piratebay-dot-org is your best friend for now (as demonoid-dot-com is down)
    4. In my case, I installed Tubgirl’s image (hint-torrent: AMDVM_SSE3 TEST1)[not sure if this will work with AMD that has only SSE2, as I got one with SSE3 support], though you can try Kalyway’s image (which didn’t work for me).
    5. Other than that, another great release was JaS’s 10.4.8 (Intel/AMD SSE2/3).

I managed to install on SATA drive (2nd primary partition), but mostly IDE drive is preffered, even at times required (incompatibility with SATA controllers).

BTW, on the same forum (the insanelymac.com), you can now find an image for Leopard, which you can install on AMD system. I now have 10.5.1 running nicely.

    Interesting article.

Is it running in 64 bit mode? Is it running 64bit code?

Was this version of Mac OS compiled from source for AMD64 and on an AMD64?

Do you have more than 4gb of ram?

Most AMD64 systems run 32 bit OS’s, and for good reason - because unless you have more than 4gb of RAM, there is really no reason to work in a 64-bit environment.

sad truth - and most AMD64 PC’s, even though the CPU can theoretically address more than 4GB of memory, the PC itself usually is incapable of handling more than 4GB of memory (all those poor suckers who bought AMD64 laptops (find an AMD64 laptop with more than 4GB of RAM - nope.) Find a 4GB sodimm! nope.

    I am running 64-bit 10.5.1, with 2GB only.

The source is same as it is for original Mac, just the kernel is patched for AMD SSE3 users.

I have 2GB on this system.

Even with 2GB I prefer to go for 64-bit OS, be that Linux or this Hackintosh, or Windows. Read more on this from other available information, tests, benchmarks. 4GB+ RAM is NOT the only reason for using 64bit environment.

Never used a notebook with AMD that has more than 4GB, so do not know. Desktops can easily manage 4GB+ RAM as at least one of my friends has 8GB (do not know for what) and tonnes of servers run hundreds of gigabytes of RAM on Opteron.

you said this AMD SSE3 is patched on kernel. But original source of mac as 7+ GB with dual layer DVD. But when i try to find torrent for AMD SSE3 its got only 3.3 GB files.
what is different between original Mac and this AMD SSE3

I tried to install Mac OS X on my laptop and when it gets to the installing screen, after all the options and stuff, it says 14 hours remaining to finish the installation. WTF! Is this caused because I used “-x” when I booted up the DVD? When I didn’t use that I got the dreaded “still waiting for root device” error.
